Key Concepts
In the Statement of Financial Performance
Trading business format (extract):
| $ | $ | |
|---|---|---|
| Sales revenue | X | |
| Less: Sales returns | X | |
| Net sales revenue | X | |
| Less: Cost of sales | X | |
| Gross profit | X | |
| Add: Other income | ||
| Rental income | X | |
| Commission income | X | X |
Service business format (extract):
| $ | $ | |
|---|---|---|
| Service fee revenue | X | |
| Add: Other income | ||
| Rental income | X | |
| Commission income | X | X |
Key rules:
- Service fee revenue is not listed under "Other income." It is always the primary revenue line for a service business.
- Each type of other income is listed as a separate line item — not combined into a single "Other income $X" line.
- Sales returns are shown as a deduction from sales revenue, not as an expense.
In the Statement of Financial Position
After year-end adjustments, income receivable and income received in advance appear in the Statement of Financial Position:
| $ | |
|---|---|
| Current assets | |
| Income receivable | X |
| Current liabilities | |
| Income received in advance | X |
| What | Which | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Sales revenue / Service fee revenue | Statement of Financial Performance | Top line |
| Other income (Rental, Commission, etc.) | Statement of Financial Performance | After gross profit — each type on its own line |
| Income receivable | Statement of Financial Position | Current asset |
| Income received in advance | Statement of Financial Position | Current liability |
Placing service fee revenue under "Other income" — Service fee revenue always appears before "Add: Other income" as a separate top-line item.
Combining all other income into one line — Each type of other income (Rental income, Commission income, etc.) must be shown as a separate line item.
Forgetting income received in advance and income receivable in the Statement of Financial Position (SoFP) — After year-end adjustments, these balances must appear in the SoFP: income received in advance as a current liability, income receivable as a current asset.
